Hanwha Solutions' Qcells Division (Hanwha Qcells), a global leader in complete clean energy solutions, has announced the completion of the Ocotillo Wells Solar project in Borrego Springs, California, now in commercial operation. The complex, which comprises a 50-megawatt (MW) solar module facility and 200-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage systems (BESS), will supply electricity to Meta, one of the world’s largest corporate buyers of renewable energy.

Hanwha Qcells managed the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of key equipment, including solar and energy storage systems (ESS). Through this project, the company has contributed to economic growth and further revolutionized the energy sector by leveraging its expertise in comprehensive utility-scale solar and storage solutions.

“Hanwha Qcells is expanding its capabilities in various fields, including project development, EPC, and power supplies, building on its solar manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. — currently the largest in North America,” said Justin Lee, CEO of Hanwha Qcells. "Given the private sector’s growing demand for renewable energy, including Big Tech, we will continue to work closely with our customers to provide integrated clean energy solutions.”

Meta, which will soon be powered by the new solar complex built by Hanwha, has run global operations on 100% renewable energy since 2020, reaching net-zero emissions. Meta has set an ambitious goal of reaching net zero emissions across its value chain by 2030, and Hanwha Qcells, with its complete U.S. solar supply chain, will support the company in reaching its goals.

Amid the accelerating clean energy transition, Hanwha Qcells has continued to forge partnerships with global companies. This January, Hanwha renewed a contract with Microsoft to supply 12 gigawatts (GW) of solar modules and EPC services over an 8-year period. In April, Hanwha Qcells successfully completed a 150-MW solar power plant in Wyoming, U.S., providing turnkey solutions for development, module supply, EPC, and power purchase agreements (PPA). In November 2023, Hanwha Qcells sold a power plant to Southern Power, a U.S. wholesale energy company.

Hanwha Qcells has been growing its presence on the back of the surging global ESS market in recent years. In 2022, the company sold seven ESS projects developed in the U.S., including a project featuring a 380 MWh BESS, where it managed the entire EPC process, including development.
